Sensing Tatami

Japan House
London, UK

This is an immersive, conceptual installation exhibition that conveys the emotional, metaphysical qualities of the tatami mat to visitors by combining ambient sensory experiences. The installation is going to evolve into two different forms occupying two spaces in Japan House.

The first space of the exhibition allows to experience the atmospheric qualities of the tatami mat that are translated into the space as "rich emptiness" "stillness" and "subtle & profound". Visitors then pass through the transition corridor to cleanse themselves from sensory modalities to prepare for the next experience. The second room allows visitors to experience the sensory qualities of the tatami mat that are translated into the space as “calming”, “warmth” and “breathing”. These qualities of the tatami mat are inherent to the product itself and emotional response that comes from sitting on the tatami mat in a Japanese-style room.
